The quick actions of a Connecticut police officer are being credited with saving a newborn's life over the weekend.
The incident happened at roughly 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Hartford police and firefighters were called to home for an unresponsive 10-day-old baby, WFSB-TV reports. When Police Officer Jackeline Torres arrived at the scene, she found the child to be conscious but "clearly choking," and she began life-saving measures.
Those efforts were successful, and the baby began breathing. Torres then rushed the child to the hospital in her cruiser.
“When she first started crying on scene, a little bit of the stress went away because I knew at least something was happening, something was working,” said Torres.
Once at the hospital, the infant was stabilized, and she is now recovering.
“Doctors stated that if Officer Torres had not done what she'd done, the baby would probably not have survived,” said Lt. Aaron Boisvert.
